POISON STUDY Read-along chapters 1-8

This month I'm taking part in the Poison Study read-along hosted in celebration for the tenth anniversary of Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder.

This was my first time reading the book even though I had found a paperback of the book at an old book store (where I get most of my books since they allow me to buy more books at far cheaper prices as well as all types of interesting books in great condition) last year.I admit I was intrigued but didn't get the opportunity to read it.It was just sitting there gathering dust (just kidding,I'd never let my books stay dirty) until I found out about the readalong. That's when I thought,Hey I should totally read this now, plus I get the chance to win books,Win Win!

I just devoured it but I'm gonna pretend that I didn't read the whole series in 4 days and just read the first 8 chapters of the first book.I'm gonna post every week of this month about my thoughts on the book (SPOILER:I thought it was awesome).

THE READ-ALONG SCHEDULE
  • October 4th-10th | Chapters 1-8
  • October 11th-17th | Chapters 9-17
  • October 18th-24th |Chapters 18-25
  • October 25th-31st |Chapters 26-32 and closing post

THANK YOU TO THESE AWESOME HOSTS

MY THOUGHTS
The book started off by introducing us to the main protagonist Yelena (I like the name),whose in the dungeon awaiting her punishment for murder. It was such a different and interesting concept that I was immediately hooked.
Yelena despite being a prisoner wasn't a weak person and she had secrets. It was clever of the author not to disclose all her secrets at once (e.g about why she killed a man) and she kept me guessing. It just made me want to keep reading until I found out everything.
The poison lessons were fun in reading and I wonder which tests are true. She had to go through a lot to prove she could do her job as a taste tester but she also had to protect herself from soldiers of General Brazell (she killed his son).
The world which it was set in had an amazing concept and she described it perfectly, although I did get confused sometimes.Ixia is a world I'd love to know more about.
Valek, the Commander's right hand man ,chief of security and assassin was quite a character.Gruff and mean at first but the author gave us just enough glimpses of his soft side to make me like him (at least in these chapters ;) ).He had even more secrets than Yelena and a scary reputation which just added to his overall mysterious persona.
A lot happened in the first 8 chapters and I have a feeling it just gets more interesting (I've already read it so what I really mean is that a lot really IS going to happen).
